Machines

My current storage and backup server. Has a ZFS mirror pool for backups of other machines. It is a 2U rackmount living in the basement, running FreeBSD. Dual Xeon L5640 CPUs, 48G of ECC RAM, Crucial MX100 512G boot drive, HGST drives for ZFS. LSI 9211-8i as HBA. The motherboard is a Supermicro X8DTN+ and the backplane for the 12 hot-swap bays is a Supermicro BPN-SAS-826EL1. This isn't the backplane I wanted, but the eBay seller's listing was incorrect (I was expecting a direct-attach backplane so I could utilize 8 SAS channels from the 9211-8i). But it works fine for my purposes for now.
My current web server. Has a ZFS mirror pool for backups of other machines. It is a 4U rackmount living in the basement, running FreeBSD.
My current desktop, running OS X Yosemite.
My second hackintosh build, for my mom.
Was once my desktop machine. It was originally named hare when assembled in March 2005 for OpenBSD development. Yes, it's old. It's a dual Xeon MP 2.8GHz (Prestonia) machine, using an E7505 chipset. It served me well as a 32-bit FreeBSD workstation, but eventually I couldn't tolerate how slow it felt compared to a modern machine with a 4-core 64-bit CPU and grew tired of not having an operating system that's well-supported with commercial desktop software. The eventual death knell was the inability to go beyond 4G of usable memory; a full-fledged modern desktop for me means 32G or more of RAM. I can get away with less on my laptop, but not on my primary desktop.
My current gateway. It contains a Supermicro MBD-X7SPA-H-O motherboard with an Intel Atom D510 processor. The motherboard is MiniITX form factor, with no CPU fan (just a heatsink). It has 2 gigabit ethernet ports and 6 SATA ports.
My former web server, in the process of being decommissioned. The same hardware as ria.
axle
My previous web server. An ancient dual PIII 550MHz machine, but has 10,000 rpm SCSI drives. Housed in a 2U rackmount case. Currently unpowered and about to be recycled.
merlin
An old dual PIII 650MHz machine, but has 10,000 rpm SCSI drives. Housed in a 2U rackmount case, running Windows XP Pro, only accessed via Remote Desktop Protocol and has no access to the Internet. I use it to run Windows software once in a blue moon, I'll likely recycle it soon. I powered it off in early 2012 and haven't powered it up since.
mbp
My 17" MacBook Pro laptop.
hush
An old Hush MiniITX system (PATA hard drive), in my family room. Due to be recycled.
